Description: In an alternate 1930s world, a scientist is commanded by a dictator to create a robot, intended as a symbol of progress. The scientist designs B.R.A.I.N., a highly intelligent robot. However, before he can imbue it with a soul, the dictator seizes it and transforms it into the Fabrication Machine. This machine is designed to build an army of war machines to eliminate the dictator’s enemies. Without a soul, the Fabrication Machine turns against humanity, using toxic gas and chemical weapons to wipe out all life on Earth. On the brink of annihilation, the scientist uses alchemy to create nine rag doll-like beings called “Stitchpunks.” He divides his soul among them using a talisman and dies after completing the final doll.

Some time later, the last Stitchpunk, named 9, awakens in the workshop. Carrying the talisman, 9 explores the ruined city and encounters 2, a frail inventor who repairs his voice box and is shocked to see the talisman. They are attacked by the Cat-Beast, a surviving war machine, which abducts 2 and the talisman. 9 is rescued and taken to Sanctuary, a cathedral inhabited by other Stitchpunks: the authoritarian leader 1, his bodyguard 8, the engineer 5, and the unstable oracle 6. 9, determined to save 2, ventures to the factory with 5, where they find 2. The Cat-Beast attacks them again, but they are saved by 7, the only female Stitchpunk.

Curiosity leads 9 to connect the talisman to the dormant Fabrication Machine, which revives and kills 2 by absorbing his soul. 9, 5, and 7 escape the factory and meet 3 and 4, silent scholar twins who reside in a library. Together, they uncover the origins of the Fabrication Machine and the grave threat it poses.
