Description: “A Serious Man,” released in 2009, is a dark comedy-drama that delves into the life of Larry Gopnik, a physics professor in 1967 St. Louis Park, Minnesota. The story begins with a prologue set in a 19th-century Eastern European shtetl, where a Jewish man invites Reb Groshkover for soup. His wife claims Groshkover is a dybbuk (a malevolent spirit) and stabs him with an ice pick, forcing him to flee.

In the main narrative, Larry’s life spirals into chaos. His wife, Judith, demands a divorce to marry another man, Sy Ableman. Meanwhile, their son Danny owes money to a classmate for marijuana, and their daughter Sarah prioritizes her social life over school. Larry’s brother, Arthur, lives with them, obsessively working on a mysterious “probability map of the universe.”

Larry’s professional life is equally troubled. A South Korean student, Clive Park, tries to bribe him to avoid failing a class, and Larry’s tenure application is jeopardized by anonymous complaints. Forced to move into a motel and left financially drained, Larry seeks advice from a junior rabbi, who suggests he change his perspective. The film explores themes of faith, morality, and the unpredictable nature of life.
