Description: Set in November 1962, a month after the Cuban Missile Crisis, *A Single Man* follows George Falconer, a middle-aged English professor living in Los Angeles. Haunted by the loss of his longtime partner, Jim, who died in a car accident eight months earlier, George sinks into deep grief and depression. After a dream in which he encounters Jim’s lifeless body, George decides to end his own life that evening, narrating his internal pain and resolve.
As George prepares for his final day, he meticulously arranges his affairs, cherishing small, beautiful moments as if seeing them for the last time. Memories of his 16-year relationship with Jim resurface throughout the day. His closest friend, Charley, calls him, appearing cheerful despite her own sorrow. George interacts with Kenny Potter, a student who exhibits an unusual interest in him, and later connects with Carlos, a Spanish male prostitute.
That evening, George dines with Charley. Their interaction starts warmly, but her longing for a deeper bond and her inability to understand his relationship with Jim frustrate him. After leaving Charley, George visits a bar, where Kenny unexpectedly joins him. They drink, go skinny dipping, and return to George’s home. When George wakes up, he finds Kenny asleep in another room, holding his gun—preventing George from taking his own life. Moved by this act, George locks the gun away, burns his suicide notes, and reflects on rediscovering the ability to *feel* rather than merely think.
