In Hill Valley, Marty encounters Buford and his gang, who attempt to lynch him, but Doc intervenes and saves him.
Doc agrees to leave 1885 after seeing the tombstone photo, but without fuel, the DeLorean cannot reach the required speed of 88 mph. Doc devises a plan to use a steam locomotive to push the car to the necessary velocity. While scouting a rail spur, Doc and Marty save Clara Clayton from a runaway wagon, altering her fate from the original timeline. Doc and Clara quickly develop a romantic connection.
At a town festival, Buford tries to shoot Doc, but Marty prevents the attack. Buford then challenges Marty to a duel in two days, and Marty, succumbing to anger, accepts. Doc warns Marty about the dangers of being provoked and reveals that Marty’s future includes a car accident. Although Doc’s name disappears from the tombstone photo, the date and the tombstone itself remain unchanged, leaving questions about fate and the future.
