The origins of the term “Black Friday” trace back to Philadelphia in 1961, where it was initially used by police to describe the heavy traffic and crowds following Thanksgiving. Since the early 21st century, U.S. retailers have tried to introduce the concept of Black Friday to other countries to compete with online shopping. The term “black” has historically been associated with days of misfortune, and while many events have been called “Black Friday,” the most notable was the Panic of 1869. This financial crisis occurred when financiers Jay Gould and James Fisk attempted to manipulate the gold market with connections to the Grant Administration. President Grant intervened by releasing a large amount of gold, causing prices to drop by 18% and leaving fortunes destroyed, including that of the president’s brother-in-law.
The first known use of “Black Friday” referring to the day after Thanksgiving appeared in a 1951 journal, Factory Management and Maintenance, and again in 1952. It described workers calling in sick to extend their holiday weekend, though this usage didn’t gain popularity. Around the same time, police in Philadelphia and Rochester began using “Black Friday” and “Black Saturday” to describe the chaos of the Christmas shopping season. In 1961, Philadelphia attempted to rebrand the days as “Big Friday” and “Big Saturday,” but the effort failed.
The term gradually spread, appearing in The New York Times in 1975 to describe Philadelphia’s busiest shopping and traffic day. By 1985, however, retailers in cities like Cincinnati and Los Angeles were still unfamiliar with the phrase.
