Description: In 1873, in the New Mexico Territory, a man (Daniel Craig) wakes up injured in the desert with a mysterious metal bracelet on his left wrist and no memory of who he is. He stumbles into the town of Absolution, where Meacham (Clancy Brown), a preacher, tends to his wounds. Sheriff John Taggart (Keith Carradine) recognizes the stranger as Jake Lonergan, a wanted outlaw, and tries to arrest him. Jake nearly escapes but is stopped by Ella Swenson (Olivia Wilde). Taggart and his men prepare to take both Jake and Percy Dolarhyde (Paul Dano), a troublesome drunk, to Santa Fe for trial.
Percy’s father, Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford), a powerful cattle baron, arrives with armed men, demanding his son’s release. He also wants Jake, who has stolen gold from him. As tensions rise, alien ships suddenly attack the town. Percy, Taggart, and several townsfolk are abducted by the aliens. Jake’s bracelet unexpectedly activates, turning into a weapon, and he manages to shoot down one of the ships, halting the assault.
Dolarhyde, Ella, and a group of townspeople form a posse to track an injured alien that fled from the downed ship. Meanwhile, Jake visits an abandoned cabin and has a flashback, remembering his abduction by the aliens along with a woman named Alice. With his memories gradually returning, Jake joins the posse. That night, they discover a capsized steamboat, which the aliens seem to have discarded far from any river. While camping inside it, an alien kills Meacham, who sacrifices himself to save Emmett, Taggart’s grandson.
By morning, most of the posse has left, and Jake’s former gang ambushes the remaining members. Jake tries to reclaim control of the gang but fails. The aliens attack again, capturing Ella. Jake leaps onto their ship and confronts the alien pilot, causing the vessel to crash into a river.
