**Storyline:**
Makar Kanti Chatterjee is a self-made, semi-educated businessman who struggles to communicate effectively in English. Meanwhile, his son, Suman, becomes romantically involved with a woman married to an introverted forest officer, Ashoke Sanyal. These two intertwined yet distinct stories form the core of the film, *Dictionary 2021*.
Life is not always as it appears, and director Bratya Basu explores this duality in *Dictionary*. On one hand, there’s Makar, or Mak, who is obsessed with achieving a lavish and progressive lifestyle. He is deeply troubled when he sees his son enjoying a simple meal of curd and flattened rice, as it reminds him of his own humble past.
On the other hand, Makar’s brother-in-law, Suman, finds himself in an extramarital affair after being posted as a teacher in Purulia. Suman’s story connects the two narrative threads, both of which revolve around finding meaning in life. While Makar struggles with English vocabulary, Ashoke grapples with understanding what it truly means to be a husband, especially as he becomes aware of his wife’s relationship with Suman.
Both characters ultimately seek answers within the pages of a dictionary, but the film struggles to fully develop its dual narratives. Neither story receives adequate attention, leaving the characters underdeveloped. Makar often serves as comic relief rather than a well-rounded father, husband, or employer. Similarly, Ashoke and his family seem disconnected and rootless. The film attempts to bridge these two narratives but falls short in creating a cohesive and impactful conclusion.
