**Storyline:**
On August 22, 1972, Sonny Wortzik, a first-time criminal, along with his friend Salvatore “Sal” Naturile and Stevie, attempts to rob the First Brooklyn Savings Bank. Their plan quickly falls apart when Stevie panics and escapes. To their disappointment, the bank has already completed its daily cash pickup, leaving only $1,100 behind. In desperation, Sonny takes the bank’s traveler’s checks and burns the register in a trash can. However, the smoke draws attention, and the police soon surround the building. Sonny and Sal, now in a panic, take the bank employees hostage.
Detective Sergeant Eugene Moretti contacts the bank, and Sonny threatens to harm the hostages. Sal reassures Sonny that he’s ready to take extreme measures if needed. When a security guard suffers an asthma attack, Sonny releases him to show goodwill. Moretti persuades Sonny to step outside. Using the head teller as a shield, Sonny engages in a tense dialogue with Moretti, eventually shouting “Attica! Attica!” in reference to the recent Attica Prison riot. The crowd begins to cheer for Sonny.
Sonny demands a vehicle to take him and Sal to the airport for a flight, as well as pizzas for the hostages. He also insists that his wife be brought to the bank. When his partner, Leon Shermer, arrives, it’s revealed that the robbery was intended to fund Leon’s sex reassignment surgery. Leon also discloses that Sonny has children with his estranged wife, Angie.
As night falls, the FBI takes control of the situation, shutting off the bank’s lights. Agent Sheldon refuses to grant Sonny further concessions. However, when the bank manager, Mulvaney, goes into diabetic shock, Sheldon allows a doctor to enter. Sheldon then convinces Leon to speak with Sonny over the phone. Leon, who had been hospitalized after a suicide attempt, declines Sonny’s offer to join the escape. Sonny assures the police that Leon had no involvement in the robbery.
