In 1926, British wizard and magizoologist Newt Scamander arrives in New York City. He meets Mary Lou Barebone, the leader of the New Salem Philanthropic Society, who warns about the dangers of witches and wizards. While trying to catch a Niffler that escaped from his magical suitcase, Newt crosses paths with Jacob Kowalski, an aspiring baker, and they accidentally switch suitcases. Tina Goldstein, a former Auror, arrests Newt for violating magical laws but later releases him when his suitcase only contains baked goods. Meanwhile, Jacob opens Newt’s suitcase and releases several magical creatures into the city.
Tina and Newt find Jacob, and Tina takes them to her apartment to meet her sister, Queenie. Jacob and Queenie develop a mutual attraction, despite the prohibition of relationships between wizards and No-Majs. Newt shows Jacob the magical world inside his suitcase, which houses various creatures, including an Obscurus—a parasitic force that threatens magically gifted children.
As they work to recapture the escaped creatures, Newt’s suitcase is confiscated by MACUSA officials who mistakenly believe one of his creatures killed Senator Henry Shaw Jr. The Director of Magical Security accuses Newt of conspiring with the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald and plans to destroy Newt’s suitcase and erase Jacob’s memories. With the help of Queenie and Jacob, Newt and Tina escape execution, recover the suitcase, and recapture the final creature.
