**Storyline:**
After Anastasia Steele ends her relationship with Christian Grey, he begins experiencing nightmares about his troubled and abusive childhood. Meanwhile, Ana starts a new job as an assistant to Jack Hyde, an editor at Seattle Independent Publishing (SIP), who has seen his last three assistants quit within 18 months. Ana crosses paths with Christian unexpectedly at the opening of her friend Jose Rodriguez’s photography exhibition. She is surprised to learn that Christian has purchased all of Jose’s portraits of her.
Christian expresses his desire to reunite with Ana and agrees to her conditions: no rules, no punishments, and no hidden terms. He also reveals personal details about his past, including the fact that his birth mother was a crack-addicted sex worker.
As Ana and Jack head out for a drink after work, a young woman who resembles Ana approaches her. Christian arrives at the bar and acts coldly toward Jack before quickly leaving with Ana. He warns her about Jack’s questionable reputation, but Ana dismisses his concerns. Later, when Jack invites Ana to accompany him on a trip to a New York book expo, she declines after discussing it with Christian.
Shortly after, Ana notices the same woman watching her and Christian from a distance. Christian initially avoids discussing her identity but eventually reveals that she is Leila Williams, a former submissive. After their contract ended, Leila wanted more from the relationship, but Christian terminated it. Leila later married, but her husband’s death caused her to have a mental breakdown, leading her to stalk Ana and Christian.
Before attending the Grey family’s annual charity ball, Christian takes Ana to Escala, a beauty salon owned by Elena Lincoln. Elena is a family friend and Christian’s former dominant, who introduced him to the BDSM lifestyle after seducing him when he was a minor.
