**Storyline:**
In 1961, Katherine Johnson works at the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, alongside her colleagues Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan. All three are African-American women working in a unit segregated by both race and gender. Katherine is assigned to assist Al Harrison’s Space Task Group due to her expertise in analytic geometry, becoming the first Black woman on the team. Despite her skills, she faces dismissive attitudes, particularly from head engineer Paul Stafford.
Mary is tasked with the space capsule heat shield team, where she quickly identifies a design flaw. Encouraged by her team leader, Karl Zielinski, a Polish-Jewish Holocaust survivor, Mary pursues an official NASA engineer position. However, she is informed that additional courses are required. Determined, Mary petitions to attend an all-white high school for night classes, overcoming initial resistance from her husband and successfully appealing to a local judge.
Katherine meets Lt. Col. Jim Johnson, who initially doubts women’s mathematical abilities but later apologizes and builds a connection with Katherine and her daughters. As the Mercury 7 astronauts visit Langley, astronaut John Glenn makes a point to acknowledge the West Area women. Katherine impresses Harrison by solving a complex mathematical problem, a crucial step as the Soviet Union’s success with Yuri Gagarin intensifies the pressure for American space exploration.
Harrison eventually learns about Katherine’s struggles, including her need to walk half a mile to use a segregated bathroom. In response, he removes the “Colored Bathroom” sign and ends segregation within the facility. Katherine is then included in high-level meetings to calculate the space capsule’s re-entry point. Despite her contributions, her name is omitted from reports at Stafford’s insistence, with her work credited solely to him.
