John Smith is an alien from the planet Lorien. As a child, he was sent to Earth along with eight others, known as the Garde, to escape the Mogadorians, who had destroyed their home planet. John is protected by his guardian, Henri, and has developed extraordinary powers, including enhanced strength, speed, and agility.
The Mogadorians, led by their Commander, discover the existence of the nine children and pursue them to Earth. The Garde can only be killed in numerical order, from One to Nine. Three of them have already been eliminated, and John is Number Four. Aware of the danger, John and Henri relocate from a beachside home in Florida to an old farm in Paradise, Ohio. There, John befriends Sam Goode, a conspiracy theorist, and adopts a Beagle named Bernie Kosar. He also falls in love with Sarah Hart, an amateur photographer, but faces harassment from her ex-boyfriend, football player Mark James.
During a Halloween festival, Mark and his friends chase Sarah and John into the woods. When they attack, John uses his powers to defend himself and Sarah. Sam witnesses this, forcing John to reveal his true identity. The next day, Mark’s father, the local sheriff, questions Henri about the incident. Henri advises John that they must leave due to growing suspicion, but John refuses because of his feelings for Sarah.
Meanwhile, the Mogadorians continue their hunt for John, while being tracked by Number Six, another member of the Garde. Number Six, whose guardian has been killed, realizes that the remaining Garde must unite to fight the Mogadorians. The Mogadorians eventually locate John and manipulate two conspiracy theorists into capturing Henri. During the rescue mission, John and Sam face an attack, resulting in Henri’s death. They manage to escape with several Lorien artifacts, including a blue rock that serves as a tracking device for the other Garde, setting the stage for their impending battle against the Mogadorians.
