Description: In the year 2169, humanity is genetically engineered to halt aging at 25 years old. On their 25th birthday, a one-year countdown begins on their forearm. When it reaches zero, the person “times out” and dies instantly. Time has become the universal currency, exchanged directly between individuals or stored in “time capsules.” Society is divided into Time Zones, with Dayton being the poorest, a manufacturing ghetto where people rarely have more than 24 hours on their clocks. In contrast, residents of New Greenwich possess enough time to achieve near-immortality.
The story follows Will Salas, a 28-year-old factory worker in Dayton, who lives with his 50-year-old mother, Rachel. One night, Will saves a 105-year-old man named Henry Hamilton from a gang of time-robbing thugs led by Fortis. Hamilton, who has 116 years on his clock but is weary of life, reveals to Will that the elites of New Greenwich hoard most of the time, manipulating prices to ensure the poor continue to die. The next morning, Hamilton transfers all but five minutes of his time to Will before timing out by jumping off a bridge.
Will’s sudden wealth draws suspicion, and he is wrongly accused of murdering Hamilton by Raymond Leon, a Timekeeper. After giving 10 years of his time to his friend Borel, Will plans to leave for New Greenwich with his mother. However, due to a sudden increase in bus fare, Rachel cannot afford the trip and is forced to run back to Dayton. She arrives seconds too late and dies in Will’s arms. Devastated, Will vows revenge on the wealthy elites of New Greenwich, determined to take everything they have.
