**Storyline:**
Novelist James Foster and his wife Em are vacationing at a resort in the fictional seaside country of Li Tolqa, where a local festival is taking place. Their strained marriage worsens when Gabi, a fan of James’s only published novel, invites them to spend time with her and her husband Alban. Despite warnings to stay within the resort, the four decide to venture into the countryside.
At a beach, Gabi unexpectedly seduces James, and after a day of outdoor activities, the group drives back to the hotel while intoxicated. During the journey, James accidentally hits and kills a local man. Gabi convinces them not to report the incident, citing the country’s corruption and their potential danger.
The next day, James is arrested and informed that the punishment for his crime is execution by the victim’s firstborn son. However, Li Tolqa offers a unique justice system: for a high fee, the guilty can be cloned, and their duplicate is executed instead. James, who comes from wealth, pays the fee and witnesses his clone’s death. Em is horrified and insists on leaving, but James, fascinated by the experience, decides to stay. He hides his passport and encourages Em to return to America alone.
James extends his stay, reuniting with Gabi and Alban. They introduce him to a group of Western tourists who have also committed serious crimes and paid for their clones to be executed. These individuals return annually, commit crimes, and pay to witness their clones’ deaths, finding twisted enjoyment in the process.
