**Storyline:**
In the 1970s, Philadelphia faces turmoil as protests erupt over the closure of job sites, while the city’s NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles, suffers through a series of losing seasons. In 1976, substitute teacher Vince Papale joins his friends for a casual game of football on a sandlot one evening. After the game, he returns home to find his wife, Sharon, frustrated with his inability to provide for their family.
The next morning, Papale is unexpectedly laid off from his teaching job. That night, he heads to the bar where he works part-time as a bartender. The bar is filled with passionate Eagles fans who are watching a news report about the team’s new head coach, Dick Vermeil. Vermeil announces open tryouts for the Eagles, and the regulars at the bar encourage Papale to give it a shot. When Papale returns home, he discovers that Sharon has left him, leaving behind a note that deeply wounds him.
Desperate for income and direction, Papale receives support from his friends and decides to attend the Eagles’ tryouts at Veterans Stadium. Competing against hundreds of locals, Papale impresses Coach Vermeil with his determination and performance. Vermeil invites Papale to training camp to vie for a spot on the team.
