Description: “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” is a 2010 film that follows the journey of 16-year-old Craig Gilner, who contemplates suicide and seeks help at a hospital. After confiding in Dr. Mahmoud, Craig is admitted to the adult psychiatric ward for a five-day stay. Craig feels overwhelmed by the pressures of his elite high school, Executive Pre-Professional, and the stress of applying to a prestigious summer program. He also struggles with insecurities, constantly comparing himself to his accomplished best friend, Aaron, and his demanding father, who pushes him to excel. At first, Craig is unsure about his decision to stay, fearing judgment from his peers, particularly Nia, his crush and Aaron’s girlfriend.
During his stay, Craig befriends Bobby, an adult patient who becomes a mentor figure. Bobby is anxious about an upcoming interview for a group home and worries about his limited wardrobe. Craig offers him one of his father’s dress shirts to wear, earning the admiration of Noelle, another teenage patient who is being treated for self-harm. Craig and Noelle attend a painting session together, where Craig creates a piece that represents his inner thoughts, describing it as a map of his brain.
As the days pass, Craig forms meaningful connections with Bobby, Noelle, and other patients. Bobby shares his struggles as a father and his history of multiple suicide attempts, while also encouraging Craig to pursue Noelle. One evening, Nia visits Craig and reveals that she and Aaron have broken up.
The film explores themes of mental health, self-discovery, and the power of human connection, offering a heartfelt and insightful narrative.
