Description: “Maaran” is a 2022 Indian Tamil-language action thriller film directed by Karthick Naren. The screenplay and dialogues were co-written by Suhas–Sharfu and Vivek. Produced by T. G. Thyagarajan, Sendhil Thyagarajan, and Arjun Thyagarajan under Sathya Jyothi Films, the movie features Dhanush, Malavika Mohanan, and Samuthirakani in lead roles, with Smruthi Venkat, Ramki, Krishnakumar Balasubramanian, and Mahendran in supporting roles. The music is composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, with cinematography by Vivekanand Santhosham and editing by Prasanna G. K. The film was released on Disney+ Hotstar on March 11, 2022.
The story follows investigative journalist Mathi Maaran (Dhanush), who finds himself in trouble after exposing the corrupt practices of a politician named Pazhani (Samuthirakani). The project was announced in February 2020 as Dhanush’s 43rd film in a leading role. Karthick Naren was chosen as the director, and G. V. Prakash Kumar was on board as the composer. The film marks Dhanush’s third collaboration with Sathya Jyothi Films after “Thodari” (2016) and “Pattas” (2020).
Initially planned for a May 2020 start, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed production, allowing Naren to focus on pre-production during the lockdown. The screenplay was co-written by Suhas–Sharfu, known for their work in Malayalam films like “Varathan” (2018) and “Virus” (2019), with additional contributions from Vivek, who made his debut in screenplay and dialogue writing.
