Description: Mulk (2018) is a compelling Hindi film based on a true story, depicting the struggles of a Muslim family in India as they strive to restore their honor after one of their members becomes involved in terrorism. The narrative follows Murad Ali Mohammed, a lawyer living harmoniously in Varanasi with his extended family. His daily life includes prayers at the local mosque and conversations with his Hindu neighbors over tea. His family comprises his wife Tabassum, his brother Bilaal, who runs a mobile phone shop, Bilaal’s wife Chhoti-Tabassum, and their children Shahid and Aayat. Murad’s son Aftab resides abroad with his wife Aarti, a lawyer who is somewhat distant from the family.
The story unfolds on Murad’s 65th birthday, as Aarti visits them, and the family enjoys a celebratory evening with friends and neighbors. Simultaneously, it is revealed that Shahid has joined a terrorist group led by Mehfooz Alam, who assigns him to carry out a bomb attack in Allahabad. After the celebration, Shahid executes the plan, resulting in numerous casualties. SSP Danish Javed is tasked with investigating the attack, and he eventually confronts and kills Shahid during an escape attempt.
Following the incident, the police interrogate Murad’s family, turning their home upside down for evidence. Bilaal is taken into custody, and Aarti steps forward as his defense attorney. Despite enduring harsh interrogation, Bilaal provides no information. The film highlights the family’s fight against prejudice and their quest for justice in the face of societal judgment.
