Description: In 1870, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a former Confederate Infantry soldier, earns a living by traveling from town to town, reading newspapers to the public for ten cents per person. After one such event, he sets off for his next destination but comes across an overturned wagon on the road. Investigating further, he discovers a Black soldier and a young White girl named Johanna, dressed in Native American attire. Following an encounter with a Union Army patrol, Kidd is instructed to take Johanna to Union officials at a checkpoint up the road, where they will handle her Bureau of Indian Affairs paperwork and reunite her with her surviving family. Reluctantly, Kidd agrees to the task.
At the checkpoint, Kidd learns that the Bureau of Indian Affairs representative is unavailable for three months. Taking shelter with a former Confederate soldier, Kidd reads the news and eventually accepts the responsibility of returning Johanna to her family. As they journey together, they struggle to communicate and find common ground. Their challenges worsen at their next stop when Kidd is approached by three ex-Confederate soldiers-turned-criminals who express interest in purchasing Johanna. Kidd refuses, leading to a pursuit and a shootout in the wilderness, where Johanna and Kidd must work together to survive.
Later, Kidd encounters a radical militia group aiming to rid the county of “outsiders.” He is asked to read approved news for the town’s leader but instead chooses to share a story about coal miners standing against a dangerous employer. This sparks civil unrest, culminating in Johanna killing the town’s leader and saving Kidd.
