Description: Nymphomaniac: Vol. II (2013) is a film that delves into the complex and provocative life of its protagonist, Joe. The story begins with Joe reflecting on her early childhood and her precocious fascination with sexuality, inspired by a fly fishing lure on the wall and Seligman’s admiration for Izaak Walton’s book *The Compleat Angler*. Her father, a tree-loving doctor whom she adores, contrasts sharply with her mother, whom Joe describes as a “cold bitch.”
During her adolescence, Joe loses her virginity to Jerôme, a young man whose casual departure after their encounter leaves her deeply disappointed. Seligman, however, notes that the sequence of events mirrors the Fibonacci sequence. Years later, Joe engages in a contest with her friend B during a train ride, aiming to have the most sexual encounters with passengers before reaching their destination. Joe’s aggressive advances lead her to a confrontation with a married man, S, marking the beginning of a series of morally questionable actions.
As Joe matures, she explores her understanding of love, which she views as “lust with jealousy added.” She joins a group called “The Little Flock,” dedicated to liberating themselves from societal norms surrounding love. However, Joe eventually leaves as the other members develop emotional attachments to their partners. In her adult life, Joe drops out of medical school and takes a job as a secretary at a printing company, where she unexpectedly reunites with Jerôme, her first lover.
The film navigates themes of sexuality, relationships, and the search for identity, offering a raw and unflinching portrayal of Joe’s journey.
