The plot follows Luis Vargas (Antonio Banderas), who sends for American Julia Russell (Angelina Jolie) from Delaware to become his mail-order bride. Upon arrival, Julia looks nothing like the photos she had sent. She explains her deception, stating she wanted a man who valued more than just appearance. Luis, too, admits to lying about his financial status, revealing he is the wealthy owner of a coffee export business. Despite their mutual distrust, they vow to build trust and understanding.
Luis and Julia marry shortly after her arrival, and Luis becomes deeply infatuated with her. However, Julia’s sister, Emily, grows concerned about her well-being and sends heartfelt letters. To avoid suspicion, Luis pressures Julia to respond, fearing Emily might involve the authorities if she remains unanswered.
