Description: In 2013, Matt and Nicole Teague prepare to share the heartbreaking news with their daughters, Molly and Evie, that Nicole’s ovarian cancer is terminal. Outside, their best friend, Dane Faucheux, comforts the children. Rewinding to 2000, Matt, a journalist, and Nicole, a theater performer, live in New Orleans. Nicole introduces Matt to Dane, her college friend and aspiring stand-up comedian working as a camera operator. Over the years, the three grow close. By 2008, Matt and Nicole are raising their daughters in Fairhope while Matt works as a war correspondent, often spending months abroad, which strains their family life. Meanwhile, Dane stays in New Orleans, stuck in unfulfilling jobs.

On Thanksgiving, feeling hopeless, Dane decides to backpack at the Grand Canyon without informing anyone. Another backpacker notices his concerning behavior and offers support. This act of kindness, along with a voicemail from the Teague family, renews Dane’s will to live. In 2010, Matt learns about Nicole’s affair, but with Dane’s help, they reconcile. Dane returns home, takes up a manager position at a sporting goods store, and starts dating a woman named Kat.

In September 2012, Nicole is diagnosed with cancer and begins chemotherapy. Sensing their need for support, Dane offers to stay with the family for a few weeks. As Nicole’s health declines, Dane decides to remain, taking on household responsibilities. Kat struggles to understand Dane’s unwavering loyalty to the Teagues, leading to their breakup. On Christmas, Nicole’s abdomen ruptures, and Dane steps in to care for the children. After surgery, the doctor informs Matt that Nicole’s cancer has spread, giving her about six months to live. Nicole chooses not to tell their daughters until her condition significantly worsens.

Nicole creates a bucket list, and with Matt and Dane’s help, she fulfills dreams like being the Grand Marshal of the Mardi Gras parade, swimming in a historic fountain with friends, and writing letters to her daughters for future milestones. As 2013 nears its end and Nicole’s health deteriorates, they finally break the news to their daughters, leaving Dane heartbroken as the girls grieve.
