Description: Set in a rural backdrop, *Panchlait* tells the story of a village community called Mahato, which still has no electricity. The narrative revolves around multiple social interactions and a subtle romance between the lead characters. Living in darkness, the villagers are absorbed in their own joys and sorrows. The Panchlait, also known as Petromax, holds great significance in their lives, and owning one is a matter of pride. After much effort, the villagers finally acquire the coveted Panchlait. However, their innocence and lack of knowledge lead to humorous situations as they struggle to light it. The only person who knows how to operate it is Godhan, an outcast falsely accused and banished from the village. The story follows how the villagers manage to illuminate their village despite their limitations.

In this remote Indian village, devoid of electricity, the community decides to purchase a Panchlait to restore their pride and honor, which had been tarnished by neighboring communities. Godhan, a rebellious villager, returns to the hamlet to claim his deceased grandmother’s property. He also secretly plans to reunite with his childhood sweetheart, Munri, and marry her. However, conflicts over power and property with the village head lead to a series of unfortunate events in Godhan’s life. Refusing to submit to the village authorities, he challenges them and stands his ground.

The budding romance between Godhan and Munri serves as a backdrop to highlight the rigid norms of the panchayat system, often stretching the plot to tedious lengths. Adapted from Phanishwar Nath Renu’s famous short story *Panchlight*, the narrative loses some of its charm as it oscillates between various aspects of Godhan’s struggles.
