**Storyline:**
At Paris-Orly Airport in France, an Iranian woman named Marjane “Marji” Satrapi glances at the flight schedule, her gaze lingering on a flight bound for Tehran. Taking a seat, she lights a cigarette and begins to reflect on her childhood.
Marji grew up in Tehran, dreaming of becoming a prophet and idolizing Bruce Lee. Her life takes a dramatic turn when the 1979 Iranian Revolution erupts against the Shah of Iran. While her middle-class family eagerly participates in the protests, Marji is forbidden from joining. One day, her uncle Anoosh, recently released from a nine-year prison sentence, visits the family for dinner. His tales of evading the government deeply inspire Marji.
Despite the Shah’s ousting and the hope for a better future, Marji’s family struggles under the new regime. The rise of Islamic fundamentalists leads to harsh restrictions, including mandatory modest dress and headscarves for women. Tragically, Anoosh is rearrested and executed for his political views, along with other dissidents. Many of Marji’s family friends and thousands of Iranians flee to Europe or the United States in search of freedom.
As the Iran-Iraq War breaks out, Marji witnesses the devastation and loss firsthand. The oppressive government enforces unjust laws, further eroding social freedoms. In one heartbreaking incident, her uncle Taher suffers a heart attack and requires open-heart surgery, which can only be performed in England. However, with borders closed and bureaucratic incompetence, obtaining permission to leave proves nearly impossible.
Living under constant repression, Marji and her family strive to adapt while grappling with the harsh realities of their changing world.
