In the Forest of Okoya, the mythical Pokémon Zarude discovers an abandoned infant boy washed up on a riverbank. Unable to leave the child, Zarude adopts him, naming him “Koko,” and raises him away from his tribe, which resides near the Great Tree deep in the jungle—a place forbidden to humans.
Ten years later, Ash Ketchum and Pikachu arrive in the Forest of Okoya from nearby Milyfa Town. While trying to catch a wild Cramorant, they encounter a research team from the Biotope Company, a scientific organization studying the jungle. Meanwhile, Team Rocket secretly follows the group, planning to infiltrate their operations.
Ash witnesses Koko falling into a waterfall after being knocked out by a pipe while swinging on a vine with a wild Skwovet. Ash rescues Koko and takes him to Milyfa Town’s Pokémon Center. Upon waking, Koko, who has never encountered humans before, panics and escapes. Realizing Koko believes he is a Pokémon, Ash and Pikachu help him understand human life.
Ash, Pikachu, and Koko eventually meet Zarude, who reveals the truth about Koko’s origins. Zarude takes them to an abandoned lab where he found a photo of Koko’s human parents. He then returns to the Great Tree alone.
Ash and Koko visit the Biotope Company’s headquarters, where they meet Dr. Zed. Zed explains that Koko’s parents, Chrom and Rin Molybden, were scientists who studied the jungle’s healing springs and that Koko’s real name is Al Molybden. Tragically, Chrom and Rin died in a car accident ten years ago, and Al was presumed dead. Zed scans Koko’s pendant, uncovering partially corrupted data that shows an image of the Great Tree. Distressed by the news of his parents’ fate, Koko flees to the Great Tree.
