**Storyline:**
In Japan during the Muromachi period, an Emishi village is attacked by a demon. Ashitaka, the last prince of the Emishi, kills the demon before it harms the village, but in the process, he becomes cursed by its corruption. The curse grants him superhuman strength but will ultimately spread and lead to his death. The demon is revealed to be Nago, a boar god corrupted by an iron ball lodged in its body. The village’s wise woman advises Ashitaka to seek a cure in the western lands where Nago originated, warning him he cannot return home.
Ashitaka journeys west and encounters Jiko-bō, a scheming monk who suggests seeking help from the Great Forest Spirit, a deity that transforms from a deer-like figure by day to a giant creature by night. Along his path, he arrives at Tataraba, a town led by Lady Eboshi, where he learns of the ongoing conflict between the town and the forest gods. Eboshi’s town thrives on deforestation and iron production, creating tension with the forest deities and the local daimyō, Asano. Tataraba also shelters outcasts, including lepers who manufacture firearms.
San, a human girl raised by the wolf goddess Moro, harbors deep resentment toward humans for their destruction of the forest. When she attempts to assassinate Eboshi, Ashitaka intervenes, revealing his cursed arm and earning the townspeople’s fear. Despite being injured, he rescues San and forms a bond with her as they work together to protect the forest.
Meanwhile, Eboshi conspires with Jigo to kill the Great Forest Spirit, aiming to gift its head to the Emperor in exchange for protection. The Forest Spirit’s head is rumored to grant immortality, intensifying the stakes for both humans and gods.
