**Storyline:**
“Red Cliff,” also known as “Chibi” (赤壁), is a Chinese epic war film released in 2008–2009. Directed by John Woo, it depicts the events of the Battle of Red Cliffs (208–209 AD), a pivotal moment marking the end of the Han dynasty and the onset of the Three Kingdoms period in Imperial China. The film features a star-studded cast, including Tony Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhang Fengyi, Chang Chen, Zhao Wei, Hu Jun, and Lin Chi-ling. This marked Woo’s return to major filmmaking since 2003’s “Paycheck” and his first Chinese-language feature since 1992’s “Hard Boiled,” which also starred Leung.
In China and other parts of Asia, “Red Cliff” was divided into two parts, totaling over four hours (288 minutes). Part one (146 minutes) premiered in Beijing on July 2, 2008, while part two (142 minutes) was released on January 7, 2009. Internationally, a condensed 148-minute version was released in 2009. However, the complete two-part version became available on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on October 5, 2009, and in the US and Canada on March 23, 2010.
The first part of the film was a box office success, earning over $127 million worldwide and breaking the Asian box office record previously held by “Titanic” in mainland China.
**Plot Summary:**
Set in the summer of 208 AD during the late Eastern Han dynasty, the story follows Chancellor Cao Cao as he leads the imperial army to eliminate the southern warlords Sun Quan and Liu Bei, whom he labels as “rebels.” Emperor Xian reluctantly sanctions the campaign. Cao Cao’s formidable forces swiftly conquer Jing Province, sparking the Battle of Changban. During the conflict, Liu Bei’s followers, including his sworn brothers Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, display extraordinary combat skills to protect fleeing civilians. The warrior Zhao Yun valiantly rescues Liu Bei’s infant son, though the family remains in peril.
