Description: Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is a 2021 action horror film written and directed by Johannes Roberts. Serving as a reboot of the Resident Evil film series, it is the seventh live-action adaptation of the popular video game franchise by Capcom. The story is based on the narratives of the first and second games, following a group of survivors during a zombie outbreak in the small town of Raccoon City in 1998. The film features a cast including Kaya Scodelario, Hannah John-Kamen, Robbie Amell, Tom Hopper, Avan Jogia, Donal Logue, and Neal McDonough.
Development for the reboot began in early 2017 after the release of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, with producer James Wan initially involved. Constantin Film chairman Martin Moszkowicz confirmed the project, and Greg Russo was initially brought on to write the script. However, Wan and Russo later left the production, and Johannes Roberts was hired as both writer and director. Filming commenced on October 17, 2020, in Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, with additional reshoots taking place in May 2021. The film premiered in Paris on November 19, 2021, and was released theatrically in the United States on November 24, 2021, by Sony Pictures Releasing.
The movie received mixed reviews from critics, with praise directed at its adherence to the source material. It has grossed $31.6 million globally. The plot includes Claire Redfield and her brother Chris, who grew up in the Raccoon City Orphanage. Claire befriends Lisa Trevor, a disfigured girl subjected to experiments by Dr. William Birkin, an Umbrella Corporation scientist conducting unethical research on orphaned children.
