Kristofer, a former security guard, loses his job on a freight ship after being caught smuggling alcohol. Facing financial difficulties, he accepts his friend Steingrimur’s offer to regain his position aboard the MV Dettifoss. Determined to take one last chance, Kristofer plans to smuggle alcohol during a trip to Rotterdam and bring it back to Iceland. However, his brother-in-law Arnor steals the money meant for the alcohol purchase and uses it to buy ecstasy instead. In Rotterdam, Kristofer is forced into a violent art theft by alcohol sellers and barely escapes during a police shootout.
As Kristofer navigates the chaos, his wife is harassed by three men who vandalize her home and workplace. She accepts Steingrimur’s offer to stay with him until Kristofer returns. Steingrimur, who was once involved with her, tries to seduce her and, in a struggle, knocks her unconscious. Believing he has killed her, he attempts to dispose of her body.
Upon the Dettifoss’s return, customs officials search the ship but find no contraband. Arnor, thinking Kristofer has discarded the ecstasy and alcohol, tries to escape the gangsters expecting the shipment. Kristofer, however, has planted the ecstasy in the captain’s car and sets up the gangsters to be intercepted at the captain’s house. Meanwhile, Kristofer discovers that his wife has survived Steingrimur’s attack and rescues her as Steingrimur tries to bury her in concrete at a construction site. At sea, Kristofer’s friends recover the alcohol.
The film premiered on 3 October 2008 and was later broadcast in German on ARD television on 1 January 2010.
