Description: Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical is a 2022 musical fantasy comedy-drama film directed by Matthew Warchus, with a screenplay by Dennis Kelly. Based on the 2011 stage musical of the same name, which itself was adapted from Roald Dahl’s 1988 novel “Matilda,” the movie serves as the second film adaptation of the story, following the 1996 version. Co-produced by TriStar Pictures, Working Title Films, and Netflix, the film features Alisha Weir as Matilda Wormwood, alongside notable actors such as Lashana Lynch, Stephen Graham, Andrea Riseborough, Sindhu Vee, and Emma Thompson. The story follows Matilda, a young girl mistreated by her parents, who uses her newfound psychokinetic powers to confront Miss Trunchbull (Thompson), the tyrannical principal of her school.
The project was first announced in November 2013, with Warchus and Kelly set to direct and write, respectively. Officially confirmed in January 2020, the production saw the return of Tim Minchin, who composed new songs for the film. Filming took place in Ireland starting in May 2021, with the cast finalized by April of that year. The movie premiered at the BFI London Film Festival on October 5, 2022, and was released in UK theaters on November 25, 2022, by Sony Pictures. In the US, it debuted in theaters on December 9, 2022, and became available for streaming on Netflix from December 25, 2022. Critics praised the film, particularly highlighting Emma Thompson’s performance.
