Description: Photographer Adam Stanheight wakes up in a run-down bathtub, his ankle chained to a pipe. Across the room is oncologist Dr. Lawrence Gordon, with the body of an apparent suicide victim lying between them, holding a revolver and a microcassette recorder. Both men discover tapes in their pockets. Adam’s tape instructs him to escape, while Gordon’s orders him to kill Adam by six o’clock; otherwise, his wife Alison and daughter Diana will be murdered. Adam finds a bag with two hacksaws hidden in the toilet. They attempt to use the saws to cut through their chains, but Adam’s breaks. Gordon realizes the saws are meant for their feet and identifies their captor as the Jigsaw Killer—a serial killer who tests his victims’ will to survive through deadly games. Gordon is familiar with Jigsaw, as he was once a suspect in the case.
Five months earlier, Gordon, while discussing the terminal brain cancer of his patient John Kramer, was interrogated by Detectives David Tapp and Steven Sing. The detectives had found Gordon’s penlight at the scene of one of Jigsaw’s games. Although Gordon’s alibi cleared him, he agreed to watch the testimony of Amanda Young, a heroin addict and the only known survivor of Jigsaw’s traps. After Gordon’s release, Tapp and Sing located Jigsaw’s warehouse using a videotape from Amanda’s game. They arrested Jigsaw and rescued a man from a trap, but Jigsaw escaped after Sing triggered a shotgun trap in the hallway, which killed him.
In the present, Alison and Diana are held captive in their home as their captor monitors Adam and Dr. Gordon through a hidden camera. Tapp, who was discharged from the police after Sing’s death and became obsessed with the Jigsaw case, is also watching the house, convinced that Gordon is the killer.
