**Storyline:**
In 1799, Ichabod Crane, a police constable from New York City, is sent to the remote Dutch village of Sleepy Hollow. The town is terrorized by a series of gruesome beheadings, including those of wealthy father and son Peter and Dirk Van Garrett, as well as a widow, Emily Winship. The locals believe the killer to be the ghost of a headless Hessian soldier from the Revolutionary War, who rides a black horse in search of his missing head.
Skeptical of the supernatural claims, Ichabod begins his investigation. Staying at the home of Baltus Van Tassel and his wife, Lady Van Tassel, Ichabod develops an interest in Katrina, Baltus’ spiritually inclined daughter. When Jonathan Masbath, a servant in the Van Garrett household, becomes the next victim, Ichabod takes his son, Young Masbath, under his care.
Following a tip from magistrate Samuel Philipse, Ichabod and Masbath exhume the bodies and discover that the widow was pregnant. Shortly after, Philipse is decapitated by the Horseman, who takes his head. Ichabod, Young Masbath, and Katrina venture into the Western Woods, where a witch reveals the location of the Horseman’s grave at the “Tree of the Dead.”
Ichabod deduces that someone has stolen the Horseman’s skull and is using it to control him. The Horseman continues his rampage, killing midwife Beth Killian, her family, and Katrina’s suitor, Brom Van Brunt. Ichabod uncovers a conspiracy linking the victims to a revised will that left Peter Van Garrett’s estate to his widow and unborn child. He concludes that the mastermind behind the murders is Baltus Van Tassel, a relative who stood to inherit the estate otherwise.
