Description: In 1846, Benjamin Barker, a barber, returns to London with sailor Anthony Hope. Fifteen years prior, Barker was wrongfully convicted and exiled by the corrupt Judge Turpin, who desired Barker’s wife, Lucy. Assuming the alias “Sweeney Todd,” Barker reopens his old barbershop on Fleet Street, located above Mrs. Nellie Lovett’s meat pie shop, known for selling the worst pies in London. Lovett informs Todd that Turpin raped Lucy, who later took her own life with arsenic. Their daughter, Johanna, is now Turpin’s ward. Todd vows revenge and resumes his barber business after Lovett, who harbors unreciprocated feelings for him, returns his old straight razors. Meanwhile, Anthony falls for Johanna but is thwarted by Turpin and his henchman, Beadle Bamford.
Todd exposes the fraudulent Italian barber Adolfo Pirelli’s hair tonic and defeats him in a public shaving contest. Pirelli later confronts Todd, revealing himself as Davy Collins, Todd’s former assistant, and demands half of Todd’s earnings. Todd kills Collins to silence him.
Turpin, advised by Bamford, visits Todd for a shave, intending to marry Johanna. Todd prepares to kill Turpin but is interrupted by Anthony, who discloses his plan to elope with Johanna. Enraged, Turpin leaves. Todd resolves to exact revenge by killing as many people as possible while awaiting another chance to murder Turpin. Mrs. Lovett devises a plan to bake Todd’s victims into pies, and Todd modifies his barber chair to dispose of the bodies through a trapdoor into her bakehouse. Meanwhile, Anthony searches for Johanna, whom Turpin has sent to an insane asylum upon discovering her plans to elope.
