Description: Ben Cronin, a talented high school swimmer, is informed by his coach that scouts from Stanford University will be attending the upcoming swim meet. Ben and his girlfriend, Amy, discuss their future plans, with Amy considering moving to California to stay close to him despite her initial preference for Rhode Island.
One day, Ben nearly hits Madison Bell with his car and offers her a ride home as an apology. Later, he finds her notebook in his car, filled with musical notes and his initials inscribed inside. When Ben returns the notebook, he meets Madison’s cousin, Christopher, and notices Madison seems stressed. They go to a diner, where Ben mentions his girlfriend, but Madison remains unfazed, claiming to have a boyfriend in New York City.
During their conversation, Ben opens up about his troubled past, including his drug use, criminal activities, and a six-month stay in juvenile detention, which ultimately led him to discover his passion for swimming. Though Ben tries to end their outing, Madison persuades him to visit the pool with her, where her flirting escalates, and they end up sleeping together. They agree to keep the encounter a secret.
The next night, Ben attends a party at Amy’s house, where Amy introduces him to her new friend, Madison. The two pretend not to know each other. However, Madison becomes increasingly obsessed with Ben, visiting his home to meet his mother and bombarding him with messages. Recognizing her unhealthy behavior, Ben demands she leave him alone. Struggling with guilt, Ben considers confessing to Amy, but Madison beats him to it, revealing their secret first.
