Description: Mae Holland, a call center intern, lands a customer support job at The Circle, a prominent tech and social media company, through her friend Annie. While her longtime friend Mercer is skeptical, Mae takes the position to support her parents, especially her father, who battles multiple sclerosis. During a company meeting, CEO Eamon Bailey unveils SeeChange, a technology that uses small cameras to provide real-time high-quality video from any location. Mae quickly rises within The Circle, immersing herself in social networking and encountering Ty Lafitte, an employee who shows suspicion toward the company’s overly enthusiastic culture. At another event focused on political accountability, The Circle’s COO, Tom Stenton, introduces a political candidate who agrees to share her daily activities with the public through SeeChange. Mae later learns that Ty created True You, a popular Circle product, which has grown beyond his control and strayed from its original purpose.
Meanwhile, Mae’s mother shows her a chandelier Mercer crafted from deer antlers. Mae shares a photo of it on her Circle profile, attracting widespread criticism toward Mercer for allegedly harming the deer. Upset by Mercer’s confrontation, Mae goes kayaking at night, only to capsize in rough waters. She is rescued by the Coast Guard, thanks to SeeChange cameras that recorded the incident. At the next company meeting, Eamon introduces Mae to the audience, discussing her rescue experience and further integrating her into The Circle’s narrative.
