Description: “The Devil All the Time” is a gripping tale set during and after World War II. The story follows Willard Russell, a U.S. Marine stationed in the Solomon Islands during the war. After witnessing the brutal crucifixion of his fellow soldier, Gunnery Sergeant Miller Jones, at the hands of Japanese forces, Willard ends Jones’ suffering with a fatal shot. This haunting experience leaves a lasting impact on Willard.
After the war, Willard returns home to Coal Creek, West Virginia, but stops in Meade, Ohio, where he meets Charlotte, a diner waitress, and photographer Carl Henderson. Willard and Charlotte marry and settle in Knockemstiff, Ohio, where they have a son named Arvin.
In 1950, Helen Hatton weds Roy Laferty, an eccentric evangelical preacher known for his bizarre acts of faith, such as pouring venomous spiders over his head during sermons. After Roy is bitten by a spider and suffers a severe allergic reaction, he becomes delusional, believing he can resurrect the dead. He ultimately kills his wife in an attempt to revive her. Following her death, Roy hitchhikes and encounters Carl Henderson and his wife Sandy, who are secretly serial killers. Carl murders Roy after he refuses to participate in their twisted ritual.
By 1957, Charlotte is diagnosed with cancer. Desperate to save her, Willard turns to fervent prayer, believing he can influence God to cure her. He even sacrifices his son’s dog in an attempt to appease divine forces. Despite his efforts, Charlotte succumbs to her illness, and Willard, overwhelmed by grief, takes his own life. Orphaned, Arvin moves in with his grandmother, Emma, where he meets Lenora, who becomes his adoptive stepsister.
The film weaves a dark and complex narrative, exploring themes of faith, despair, and the consequences of obsession, set against the backdrop of a post-war America.
