Description: After a Space Shuttle crash on Earth, a fungus-like alien organism is found on the scattered debris across the United States. When people become infected by the organism, it takes control of them during REM sleep. Tucker Kaufman, a CDC director investigating the crash, is among the first to be infected. His ex-wife, psychiatrist Carol Bennell, starts noticing strange behavior in people, feeling something is wrong. One of her patients, Wendy Lenk, describes her husband as “not her husband” anymore, while Carol’s son’s friend appears cold and emotionless.
At a Halloween party, Carol’s son Oliver discovers an unusual patch of “skin” on a partygoer, initially assumed to be makeup. Carol suspects it might be linked to reports of a rapidly spreading flu. She takes the sample to her friend, Dr. Ben Driscoll, for analysis. Later, Carol and Oliver witness a fatal car accident involving a distressed woman. When Carol approaches the scene to give a statement, an emotionless officer records her license plate and sends her away. She then drops Oliver off at Tucker’s house for the weekend.
That evening, Carol and Ben attend a dinner with Russian diplomat Yorish and Czech diplomat Belicec, along with his wife Luddie. Carol and Yorish discuss humanity’s violent tendencies over caviar and champagne. Meanwhile, Tucker uses the CDC to spread the infection further, disguising the spores as a flu vaccine. Upon returning home, Carol is attacked by a “census department” worker trying to break into her house.
