Lieutenant General Eugene Irwin, portrayed by Robert Redford, is sentenced to ten years in a maximum-security military prison for defying a presidential order, which led to the deaths of eight U.S. soldiers during a mission in Burundi. The prison’s commandant, Colonel Winter, played by James Gandolfini, initially admires Irwin but takes offense when the general critiques Winter’s military artifact collection, dismissing it as something no real combat veteran would value. Winter, who has no battlefield experience, feels deeply insulted.

Their relationship deteriorates further when Irwin intervenes to stop a guard from beating a prisoner, Corporal Ramon Aguilar, who had saluted Irwin in the yard—a gesture prohibited by Winter’s strict rules. Irwin’s growing influence among the prisoners sparks tension, and Winter sees him as a threat to his authority.

In an effort to unite the inmates, Irwin leads the construction of a stone wall, symbolizing resistance and solidarity. Winter, envious of the respect Irwin commands, orders the wall to be destroyed. When Aguilar, who was deeply involved in the project, stands in front of the bulldozer in protest, Winter signals a guard to fire a rubber bullet at his head, resulting in Aguilar’s death.

The film explores themes of leadership, power, and morality within the confines of a harsh military prison.
