Description: A Colombian maid is hired by a family in Long Island. One night, their son returns home intoxicated while his parents are away. While drunk, he apparently kills a man. The parents attempt to cover up the incident, but the maid insists on contacting the police. In response, the father murders her and forces his son to help bury her body in the marshes on their property. When the maid’s friends arrive to check on her, the father claims she left and stole money. However, her friends see through the lie and persistently return. One night, the father mistakenly shoots and kills his own son, mistaking him for an intruder. The story ends with the father staring out a window while his wife sleeps.
Throughout the film, ants appear frequently, especially at night, though their presence remains unexplained. The parents face no consequences and are ultimately freed from their parental responsibilities.
In a separate subplot, Ron and Kyla disrupt an event, leading to chaos that includes strange, mutated “life lessons.” Directed by Clay Tarver, known for *Silicon Valley*, the film offers a unique approach, with moments like Marcus and Ron hallucinating on tree fungus showcasing an inventive, lo-fi style. As Kyla remarks about a cocaine-margarita stunt, “It gets the job done”—a sentiment that applies to the entire movie.
The narrative suggests that, much like *The Hangover* could have been reworked into a serious film noir, *Vacation Friends* might have originally been conceived as a paranoid thriller about vacationers realizing too late that their new friends are overly friendly for sinister reasons.
