Description: The Man in the Moon (1991) is a heartfelt drama set in the summer of 1957. The story revolves around Danielle “Dani” Trant, a spirited 14-year-old girl living in Louisiana. Dani’s father, Matthew, often reminds her that she’s too young to wander off alone. She shares a close bond with her older sister, Maureen, who is preparing to leave for college. Maureen helps care for their younger sister, Missy, while their mother, Abigail, is expecting another child.
Dani spends her time listening to Elvis Presley and sneaking off to a neighbor’s creek for a swim. One day, she encounters Court Foster, a 17-year-old boy who scolds her for trespassing. Later, Dani’s mother informs her that an old family friend, Mrs. Foster, is visiting with her three sons. When Dani realizes Court is among them, their initial dislike intensifies. However, as they spend time together, Dani develops feelings for Court.
Meanwhile, Maureen goes on a date with her boyfriend, Billy, but their relationship falters when he pressures her. Maureen believes love should be meaningful and breaks up with him. Dani, curious about romance, seeks advice from her sister.
As the summer progresses, Dani and Court grow closer, spending evenings swimming together. Their bond deepens, but Court eventually pushes her away, reminding her that she’s too young to understand the complexities of their relationship.
The Man in the Moon beautifully captures the innocence and challenges of adolescence, exploring themes of family, first love, and growing up.
