The legend you know. The adventure you have yet to imagine.|Apr. 16, 1999|USA|124 Min.|PG-13
Genre: Action;Adventure;Fantasy
Description: In Thebes, Egypt, around 1290 BC, the high priest Imhotep becomes involved in a forbidden romance with Anck-su-namun, the mistress of Pharaoh Seti I. When the Pharaoh uncovers their affair, Imhotep and Anck-su-namun kill him. Imhotep escapes while Anck-su-namun takes her own life, trusting that Imhotep can revive her. Imhotep and his priests steal her body and journey to Hamunaptra, the city of the dead. During the resurrection ritual, they are interrupted by Seti’s guards, the Medjai. Imhotep is buried alive with flesh-eating scarab beetles and sealed in a sarcophagus beneath a statue of the god Anubis. The Medjai vow to prevent his return.

In 1926, Jonathan Carnahan gives his sister Evelyn, a librarian and aspiring Egyptologist, a mysterious box and map pointing to Hamunaptra. Jonathan admits he stole the box from Rick O’Connell, an adventurer who discovered the city while serving in the French Foreign Legion. Evelyn and Jonathan track down Rick and strike a deal for him to guide them to Hamunaptra.

Rick leads Evelyn and her team to the ancient city, where they encounter a group of American treasure hunters led by Beni Gabor, a cowardly acquaintance of Rick. Despite warnings from Ardeth Bay, the Medjai leader, both groups continue their excavations. Evelyn searches for the golden Book of Amun-Ra but instead uncovers Imhotep’s remains. Meanwhile, the Americans find the black Book of the Dead and canopic jars containing Anck-su-namun’s preserved organs.

One night, Evelyn accidentally awakens Imhotep by reading from the Book of the Dead. The group returns to Cairo, pursued by Imhotep, who is aided by Beni. Imhotep regains his strength by killing the Americans and unleashes the ten plagues on Egypt.

Rick, Evelyn, and Jonathan meet Ardeth at a museum, where Ardeth explains that Imhotep intends to resurrect Anck-su-namun by sacrificing Evelyn. Realizing the Book of Amun-Ra can destroy Imhotep, Evelyn deduces its location in Hamunaptra.
