The story begins in Seattle, Washington, where two friends, Katie Embry and Becca Kotler, talk about a local legend involving a cursed videotape in Katie’s room. According to the legend, anyone who watches the tape dies seven days later. Katie reveals she watched the tape a week ago with her boyfriend, Josh Turandot, and two other friends, Stacey Miller and Scott Conduroy. Shortly after their conversation, Katie is mysteriously killed by an unseen force.
At Katie’s funeral, her aunt, Rachel Keller, speaks with Katie’s mother, Ruth Embry, about the sudden and unexplained death. Determined to uncover the truth, Rachel begins investigating. She lives with her young son, Aidan, and soon discovers that Josh, Stacey, and Scott, who also watched the tape, died on the same night as Katie, all with disfigured appearances and at exactly 10 PM.
Rachel travels to the Shelter Mountain Inn, where the group stayed, and finds the cursed videotape in Cabin 12. She watches the tape, which contains eerie and unsettling imagery. As soon as it ends, Rachel receives a chilling phone call from an unknown person whispering, “seven days.”
Seeking help, Rachel turns to her ex-boyfriend, Noah Clay, who is also Aidan’s father. Together, they analyze the tape, creating a copy after Noah watches the original. As the days pass, Rachel experiences supernatural phenomena, including encounters with a ghostly young girl with long, wet black hair.
Her investigation leads her to Anna Morgan, a horse breeder from Moesko Island who committed suicide after her prized horses mysteriously drowned. Rachel’s nightmares intensify, and she wakes up with a hand-shaped burn mark on her arm. To her horror, she discovers that Aidan has also watched the tape, and Noah begins experiencing strange occurrences as well.
