**Storyline:**
In 1901, ten-year-old Mary Lennox, recently orphaned, is sent from her home in British India to her uncle Lord Archibald Craven’s mansion, Misselthwaite Manor, in Yorkshire, England. Neglected and unloved by her late parents, who perished in an earthquake in India, Mary grows up cold, self-centered, and emotionally repressed, unable to shed tears.
Unhappy in her new surroundings, Mary is told by the head housekeeper, Mrs. Medlock, that she will no longer be indulged as she was in India. Her uncle, often absent, is unlikely to pay her any attention. Despite being confined to her room, curiosity drives Mary to explore the mansion, where she discovers hidden, neglected areas, including her late aunt’s old room. There, she finds a mysterious key but leaves it untouched, unaware of its purpose.
Directed to play outside to keep her occupied, Mary stumbles upon a walled garden that belonged to her late aunt, Lilias. The garden has been locked and abandoned for a decade. Recognizing the key she found fits the garden’s lock, Mary keeps it a secret.
Mary befriends Dickon Sowerby, the younger brother of Martha, a cheerful housemaid. Dickon, who claims he can communicate with animals, helps Mary restore the garden. As they work together, Mary gradually becomes kinder and happier.
When Mary finally meets her uncle, she is cautious, knowing he forbade anyone from entering the garden after his wife’s tragic death. She cleverly requests permission to plant seeds in an unused area of the estate. After her uncle grants her request and leaves on an extended trip, Mary and Dickon continue their work in the garden, growing closer as they bring it back to life.
