Description: On her eighteenth birthday, Bella Swan wakes from a dream where she is an elderly woman, while her immortal vampire boyfriend, Edward Cullen, remains forever young. Although Bella is unenthusiastic, Edward’s family throws a birthday celebration for her at their home. While opening a gift, Bella gets a paper cut, triggering Jasper, Edward’s foster brother, to react violently to her blood. Edward, believing his family endangers Bella’s life, ends their relationship, and the Cullens leave Forks.
Bella falls into deep depression and isolation for months. Her father, Charlie, considers sending her to live with her mother in Jacksonville, Florida, but Bella refuses and promises to spend more time with her friends. During a movie outing with Jessica, Bella encounters a group of bikers, a risky situation that reminds her of a past incident where Edward saved her. She starts to realize that engaging in thrill-seeking activities allows her to hallucinate Edward’s presence.
Jacob Black, a Quileute friend, helps Bella cope by keeping her occupied with various activities. He mentions that many of his tribal friends follow Sam, another Quileute. One day, Jacob abruptly leaves during a movie with Bella and Mike, later avoiding her entirely. When Bella visits him, she notices he has cut his hair and bears a Quileute tattoo, similar to Sam and others. Jacob warns Bella to stay away from him.
While hiking to a meadow she and Edward frequented, Bella encounters Laurent, a vampire associate of Victoria. As he prepares to attack her, a wolf pack intervenes and kills him. Bella learns that Jacob and his tribe are shape-shifters capable of transforming into giant wolves, with vampires as their ancient enemies. A treaty exists between the Cullens and the Quileute tribe. Jacob’s pack is on high alert for Victoria, who seeks revenge for her mate, James, whom Edward killed to protect Bella.
