To fill the remaining spots, they recruit Kip, a charming but stuttering individual; Endo, who has an unusual claim to fame; Bronstein, known for his shoulder dislocation talent; and Otis, who can speak sentences backward.
As the wedding preparations progress, Doug introduces Jimmy as “Bic,” a military priest from El Salvador. At a family brunch, tensions rise when Doug nearly exposes their secret, only for Jimmy to accidentally set Gretchen’s grandmother on fire. Later, Jimmy lies to Gretchen’s father, Ed, claiming they used to play football together, leading to a challenge match against Ed’s former college teammates. Jimmy and Doug work together to maintain the charade, creating fake identities for the groomsmen based on famous Los Angeles sports figures.
Throughout the story, Jimmy takes Doug and the groomsmen on staged adventures, such as skydiving and scuba diving, to cement their fabricated friendship. Doug begins to question the plan, but a visit to a mentor reassures him that the key to success is pleasing Gretchen and her mother. To boost Doug’s confidence, Jimmy takes him to a wedding where the best man delivers a terrible speech, emphasizing Jimmy’s expertise in his profession.
The movie explores themes of friendship, trust, and self-discovery as Jimmy and Doug navigate the challenges of their elaborate scheme.
