Description: “Thieves Like Us,” released in 1974, follows the story of Bowie, a young man convicted of murder as a teenager, who escapes from a Mississippi prison in 1936 alongside Chicamaw, an experienced criminal. They join forces with T-Dub, another seasoned outlaw, who arranges their getaway. The group hides at a garage owned by an acquaintance, where Bowie meets Keechie, the garage owner’s daughter. They then move to T-Dub’s sister-in-law Mattie’s home, where tensions rise due to T-Dub’s inappropriate interest in Mattie’s older daughter, Lula.
During a car crash, Bowie is injured, and Chicamaw kills a curious officer, leaving Bowie at the garage. Keechie nurses him back to health, and the two become romantically involved. However, Bowie remains committed to his criminal life. After rejoining the gang for a bank robbery, Chicamaw impulsively kills a clerk, forcing the group to scatter. Bowie returns to Keechie, only to discover that T-Dub has been killed and Chicamaw recaptured.
Bowie poses as a sheriff to break Chicamaw out of prison, but Chicamaw murders the warden. Bowie abandons him and returns to Keechie, who is now pregnant. Mattie reluctantly allows them to stay in a cabin at her motel, but she betrays Bowie to the authorities. In a violent ambush, Bowie is killed by Rangers, leaving Keechie to face her uncertain future alone. The story concludes with Keechie preparing to leave by train, seeking a safe place to have her baby. In the original novel, Keechie also meets a tragic fate at the hands of the Rangers.
