**Storyline:**
In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, brothers Randolph and Mortimer Duke run a commodities brokerage firm, Duke & Duke Commodity Brokers. They hold opposing views on the debate of nature versus nurture and decide to conduct an experiment. They wager on the outcome of swapping the lives of two individuals from opposite ends of the social spectrum.
Their experiment begins when they witness an encounter between their sophisticated and well-educated managing director, Louis Winthorpe III, and Billy Ray Valentine, a poor street hustler. Winthorpe mistakenly assumes Valentine is attempting to rob him, leading to Valentine’s arrest. The Dukes use this incident as the foundation of their plan.
Winthorpe is framed by Clarence Beeks, a man hired by the Dukes, as a thief, drug dealer, and womanizer. As a result, he loses his job, has his assets frozen, is evicted from his home, and is abandoned by his fiancée, Penelope, and his social circle. Desperate, he turns to Ophelia, a prostitute, who agrees to help him in exchange for a future reward.
Meanwhile, the Dukes bail Valentine out of jail, give him Winthorpe’s job, and allow him to live in Winthorpe’s former home. Valentine quickly adapts to his new role, using his street smarts to excel in the business world.
At the firm’s Christmas party, Winthorpe tries to frame Valentine by planting drugs in his desk but fails. Later, the Dukes discuss the results of their experiment and settle their wager for a symbolic $1. They plan to send Valentine back to the streets and abandon Winthorpe permanently. However, Valentine overhears their conversation and seeks out Winthorpe, who has attempted suicide. With the help of Ophelia and Winthorpe’s butler, Coleman, Valentine saves Winthorpe and reveals the truth about the Dukes’ experiment.
Together, they devise a plan to reclaim their lives and seek justice.
