**Storyline:**
Valentine “Val” McKee and Earl Bassett, two handymen working in the remote desert town of Perfection, Nevada, grow tired of their jobs and decide to leave for Bixby, the nearest town. On their way out, they stumble upon the lifeless body of Edgar Deems, a local resident, who is found clinging to an electrical tower. Dr. Jim Wallace, the town’s physician, concludes that Edgar died of dehydration, apparently too frightened to climb down.
Later, an unseen creature kills a shepherd named Fred and his entire flock of sheep. Val and Earl discover Fred’s severed head and suspect a serial killer is on the loose. When two construction workers ignore their warnings and are killed by the same creature, a rock slide ensues, trapping the residents of Perfection. Attempting to seek help, Val and Earl find that the phone lines are down and the road is blocked.
As they continue their escape, they encounter a snakelike creature that wraps itself around their truck’s axle. They manage to destroy it by speeding away, later realizing it’s only one part of a much larger, wormlike monster. Val and Earl borrow horses to reach Bixby but stumble upon the buried station wagon of Dr. Wallace and his wife, who have also been killed by the creature.
A terrifying chase begins when one of the massive, burrowing worms erupts from the ground, revealing the snakelike creature to be one of its many tentacled appendages. Val, Earl, and Rhonda LeBeck, a seismology student, deduce that the creatures hunt their prey by detecting seismic vibrations. Trapped overnight on a cluster of boulders, the trio devises a plan to pole vault to safety, narrowly escaping the monstrous threat.
