**Storyline:**
The movie “Vezham” opens with a young couple, Ashok (Ashok Selvan) and Leena (Iswarya Menon), riding a bike through mountainous terrain. In the background, a news report about a serial killer is heard. They encounter an abandoned car in the middle of the road, and suddenly, Ashok is attacked from behind, with a mask thrown over his face. The story then jumps forward several years, revealing that the couple fell victim to the killer. Ashok survived, but Leena did not. Driven by the need for justice, Ashok is determined to uncover the killer’s identity, with only the sound of their voice as his clue. Can he succeed in his mission?
“Vezham” strives to be a mood-driven thriller, but its overly complex narrative often disrupts the somber and melancholic atmosphere it aims to create. The film boasts a distinct aesthetic, characterized by art direction, costumes, and makeup that exude an upscale, commercial-like elegance. The cinematography avoids bright colors, enhancing the film’s sophisticated tone. The soundtrack features breezy, pleasant songs and a subtle, understated score. Director Sandeep Shyam even attempts to incorporate elements reminiscent of Mani Ratnam’s style, including a mirror scene.
Despite its ambitious filmmaking, the script falls flat, relying heavily on repetitive twists that eventually feel forced. The polished filmmaking style distances the audience from the characters, making it difficult to emotionally connect with their plight. The actors, too, seem constrained by the understated tone, resulting in performances that lack intensity. With the exception of a few moments when Ashok Selvan expresses rage, the underlying anger within his character rarely feels palpable.
